About

Haunted Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is a city with over 1000 years of history, but we’re not interested in the kinds of tales you can find in guide books. Haunted Dubrovnik is dedicated to collecting and sharing with you the dark, the mysterious, and the ghastly from Dubrovnik’s murky past.

Dubrovnik is extremely proud of its glorious history. Despite its small size and force of arms, the city’s aristocracy ruled wisely as an independent republic for four and a half centuries. At its peak, Dubrovnik rivaled Venice for commercial and political power on the Mediterranean. But as the city grew in might, it also developed a dark side. A side few know about. A side that we want to share with you through the art of storytelling.

I am indebted to the city’s distinguished authors and historians for gathering many of these stories and inspiring my own imagination. You can read some of them in the stories section.

Haunted Dubrovik

Hi! My name is Marija Milovac, and I'm the author and owner of Haunted Dubrovnik, as well as a professional licensed tour guide of Dubrovnik-Neretva county for more than 10 years now.

I will be your guide for the tours that you might book here. I am deeply passionate about my work and the stories of Haunted Dubrovnik that I share with you. In my spare time, I enjoy immersing myself in gothic fiction, collecting antique items, and spending time with my family, which includes our two cats, Felix the wise old white cat, and Agatha, the young and cuddly black kitty.

Last year, I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Dubrovnik, specializing in the Department of History of the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Combining my academic background with my love for storytelling, I strive to merge factual dark history with old beliefs and legends to create unique and captivating experiences for my guests.

In addition to guiding tours, I am often called upon to deliver lectures and participate in storytelling events. I have had the privilege of lecturing at my university on several occasions, delving into the intriguing history of witchcraft in the old Dubrovnik Republic. I also performed at the Night of the Fortresses festival last year, captivating audiences with tales of fairies and witches from the Pelješac peninsula. These experiences allow me to further immerse myself in the rich cultural tapestry of Dubrovnik and share its mysteries with others.

I hope to bring these lesser-known stories to life with the same enthusiasm that I feel when discovering them, and I trust that you will be enchanted by the magical allure of my hometown of Dubrovnik.
